About this application

Shot blasting for foundry

Foundry shot blasting removes moulding sand, oxide scale and parting-line residue from ferrous and non-ferrous castings. Airo Shot Blast Equipments sizes hanger, tumblast and table machines to the casting weight, core complexity and required cleanliness before machining or paint.

Typical line work includes engine blocks, housings, manhole covers and general engineering castings. Send the part mix, target finish and throughput — an engineer replies with a budgetary setup.

Key Use Cases

Key Use Cases

Common production scenarios where shot blasting delivers the best finish, adhesion and throughput.

Pre-paint / Powder-coat prep

Remove mill scale and create a controlled profile for strong coating adhesion (Sa 2.5 / Sa 3).

Anti-corrosion surface cleaning

Uniform blast cleaning for steel plates, beams and fabricated structures before primer / epoxy.

Structural & fabrication lines

High-throughput processing on conveyor / roller lines with consistent finish and repeatable output.

Weld seam / scale removal

Clean weld areas, edges and heat-affected zones to improve coating quality and inspection readiness.

Deburring & edge rounding

Remove burrs and sharp edges on components for safer handling and better downstream fit-up.

Single-pass finish targets

Optimized media + wheel setup to achieve full cleaning in one pass with predictable surface profile.

Process Flow

Blasting process — step by step

A practical flow used on production lines to consistently hit Sa 2.5 / Sa 3 targets with the right profile.

  1. 1
    Loading & infeed
Steel sections or plates are placed on the roller conveyor. Feed speed is set according to section weight and required cleanliness level.
  2. 2
    Blast chamber
Multiple blast wheels (4–8 units) throw steel shot at 70–80 m/s, covering all 4 sides of the section simultaneously. No rotation needed for flat profiles.
  3. 3
    Abrasive recovery
Used shot falls to the floor screw conveyor, is elevated to the separator, cleaned of dust and broken shot, and recirculated back to the blast wheels.
  4. 4
    Dust collection
A pulse-jet dust collector captures fine dust and broken abrasive particles. Clean air is returned to the workshop — no external exhaust needed.
  5. 5
    Outfeed & inspection
Blasted sections exit on the outfeed conveyor. Surface is inspected against Sa 2.5 comparator before primer application, ideally within 4 hours.
